How UTM Zones Work

The Universal Transverse Mercator system divides the Earth into 60 vertical zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide, and expresses positions in meters instead of degrees.

60 Zones

Zone 1 starts at 180°W and zones count eastward. Each zone has its own map projection centered on its meridian, which keeps distortion small.

Easting and Northing

Positions are meters east of the zone's central meridian (easting, offset by 500,000 m) and meters north of the equator (northing). In the southern hemisphere, northing counts down from 10,000,000 m.

Latitude Bands

Letters C through X (skipping I and O) mark 8-degree latitude bands from 80°S to 84°N. The letter in 52S is a band, not the southern hemisphere.

Exceptions

Southwest Norway uses a widened zone 32, and Svalbard uses zones 31, 33, 35, and 37. This converter applies both exceptions automatically.

Worked Example

Seoul at 37.5665°N, 126.9780°E falls in zone 52, band S. Its position is expressed in meters:

When to Use UTM

Use UTM when you need to measure distances or areas with a ruler-like metric grid — surveying, paper topo maps, and GIS analysis. Stick with latitude/longitude for global datasets and web mapping.
